A New Generation of Winemakers Is Reshaping Israel’s Vineyards

royal-wine-corpBranford, CT – About 2,000 feet above sea level, and 30 miles to the northwest of Israel’s largest and most vibrant city, Tel Aviv lies hills rich with pines, oaks and scrubs. The hills are indisputably at the beginning of Israel’s winemaking transformation and have emerged as a top winegrowing region. Now featured as this month’s Cover Page of the world renowned magazine Wine Spectator, Isreal is a region with some of the most fascinating wines being imported to the USA.

“There are three main regions in Israel for wine making – Judean Hills, Galilee and the Golan Heights”, said Matthew Murphy, President of Murphy Distributors in Branford. “While customers seeking kosher wine options remain the principal buyers of Israeli wines, we find our retailers say there’s growing interest among non-kosher buyers.”

“In fact, even though Israeli wines remain rooted in red grapes, there is a growing consensus among Israel’s best winemakers that a new generation of white wines will be an important part of the mix. Blind tastings were reviewed on 120 wines from Israel and more than 30 scored an outstanding 90 points or higher on Wine Spectator’s 100-point scale”, Murphy added.

“The well-structured Rhone-style white blends, minerally Chardonnays and fruity Sauvignon Blancs – the evidence is compelling that the whites will be exceptional wines,” said Murphy.

White bottlings represent the most striking improvements in the Israeli wine scene over the past few years as skilled Israeli vintners raised the quality significantly. Vintners are beginning to explore the native grapes of the West Bank-a region showing ample promise for the years to come.
